OAU dons invent new machine through research

Post  Admin on Wed Sep 17, 2008 8:56 am

Two leading researchers at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,Osun State, are set to install a new multi-functional device for transforming agriculture, medical care and engineering work in Africa. Tunde Oyekola reports.

AGRICULTURE and Health in Nigeria and the whole continent of Africa will get a boost as from July this year when the charge particles accelerator, a mechanical device to determine the soil content and how plants take up chemicals will be inaugurated at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife.

The Tandem Accelerator which is being installed at the Centre for Energy, Research and Development in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, is also useful in the health sector as it can identify the type of diseases in the body tissues of human beings and carry out the forensic analysis of the body of a person and other materials.

Other areas of the economy that will benefit from the device include mining and development of new materials for the continent of Africa. The accelerator with 1.7mv, according to experts, is the largest in the continent of Africa. The accelerator, an -all round equipment for human eman cipation is the property of Ministry of Science and Technology and it is the most modern in black Africa.

With the installation of the device, Nigeria can take up the challenge of being one of the largest food producers in the world. It would also save the country the much -needed foreign exchange as the country’s leaders who travel abroad in search of health facilities would no longer do so since they would be attended to by medical experts who are available in the country.

According to the two experts, Professor E. I Obiajunwa, a Research Professor and Dr F. I. Ibitoye, a principal researcher and Head of Applied Nuclear Science and Technology who are working on the installation of the Tandem Accelerator, the machine can be used to determine the type of soil needed for a particular type of plant.

The machine, they said, can also be used to determine the type of mineral resources and it quantity available in the soil in an area where it is discovered. “So, a prospective miner would also benefit as he would know the quantity of mineral resources available inside the soil in a particular location before embarking on the project’’, they said.

On its usefulness for the plants, the researchers said that the accelerator can also be used in the study of how plants take up chemicals from the soil and the plants. They said that the accelerator is also useful in health management as it can be used to detect diseases in any part of the human body.

“The tandem accelerator is also useful for our health system as it can detect any disease in the body tissues and thus will make diagnosis and treatment of disease to be simplified”, they said.

They said that the accelerator is also useful for forensic analysis as it can determine the content of any material. The researchers, who said that all the people in the continent of Africa would benefit from the use of the charge particle accelerator, stated that it would accommodate scientists in all fields as any of them could make use of it to conduct their researches while students would also find it useful for their training.

‘’The tandem accelerator will also open new challenges in the training of students in the entire continent of Africa”, they said.
