Mandela Garden: Family to attend inauguration in Asaba

Post  Admin on Wed Sep 11, 2013 2:27 pm

Family members of former South African President Nelson Mandela are expected to attend the inauguration of the Mandela Garden in Asaba, the Coordinator, Chief Newton Jibunoh, said on Tuesday

Jibunoh, also the founder of Fight Against Desert Encroachment, an NGO, made this known at a forum organised by the Delta council of the NUJ in Asaba.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria that the establishment of the garden, located at the Asaba International Airport by the Delta Government, was at the request of the former president.

The environmentalist explained that Mandela's request was in appreciation of the efforts of the Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan-led administration, towards environmental protection.

Jibunoh said that no fewer than 98 trees had already been planted in the garden, adding that each of the invitees to the event, would plant one tree during the ceremony.

According to him, his experience during his travel from Europe to Africa by road inspired him to fight against climate change and desertification.
