Dom Oba II

Cândido da Fonseca Galvăo, better known as Prince Oba Oba II or Dom d'Africa.

Son of an enslaved african of yoruba descent and grandson of King Abiodun of Oyo Empire was also known as Dom Oba II D'Africa, or simply Dom Oba. He enlisted voluntarily to fight in the Paraguayan War and due to his great bravery and was inducted as an honorary official of the Brazilian army. After the war settled in Rio de Janeiro, becoming a folkloric figure and somewhat ridiculous of Rio society, and even revered as a royal prince for several african-Brazilians.

He was a personal friend of Emperor D. Pedro II and frequented the palace often. He was champion of the Brazilian monarchy, acted in the abolitionist campaign and in combating racism.

With the fall of the Empire in 1889 was pursued by the Republicans who canceled his post of lieutenant. He died soon after in July 1890.
