Insecurity: 7 Cities for Pilot Scheme

Post  Admin on Tue Feb 03, 2009 9:02 pm

Federal Government has picked seven cities nationwide to kick start a national security renewal that it hopes will serve as models in the bid to boost policing and security nationwide.
Minister of Police Affairs, Dr Yakubu Lame, said this yesterday, when he met with members of the Police Service Commission(PSC), led by the Chairman, Mr Parry Osayande, adding that the president himself identified cities that would be provided with what he calls, ‘‘adequate structures’’ that would secure the cities.
‘‘This year, Mr President has identified seven cities in this country. Those seven cities will be used as models to provide adequate structures, adequate programmes that will secure those cities. We hope that when those cities are secured, the effect will be felt in neighbouring cities. Once we achieve our goal, we will expand the scheme to other cities gradually, ’’ Lame said.
He said challenges facing the Police Affairs Ministry and the PSC were beyond mere recruitment, promotion and discipline of officers, adding that improved funding of the Force would be meaningless without a corresponding training of members of the force.
‘‘Without a corresponding training of men and women of the police, you cannot achieve the desired goals, no matter the amount of money budgeted for. A committee will soon be constituted to study the curriculum of police institutions, duration of the courses and even the staffing of the institutions, so that the police can have continuous training," he said.
