Vehicle emission test coming 有agos govt

Post  Admin on Sun Jan 25, 2009 5:53 pm

Lagos State Government has concluded plans to embark on Vehicle Emission Test as part of efforts to control environmental pollution in the metropolis.
The newly appointed General Manager of the State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Rasheed Shabi, disclosed this yesterday at a media briefing on the activities of the agency.

Shabi who noted that most vehicles in the state were not road worthy, said: 典hey contribute immensely to air pollution through the emission of dangerous gases, adding that most of the vehicles had passed their shelf life and not worthy to be on the road anymore.

溺any of them contain radioactive materials that are very dangerous to human life. 典he agency will partner with filling stations across the state to assist in carrying out the emission test on the vehicles, he said.

Besides the emission test, the General Manager also spoke on the plan of the agency to massively embark on fumigation exercise at the domestic and industrial premises in the state.

His words: 典his year, we are going to emphasize more on fumigation. I have noticed that one area the agency has not seriously explored is the fumigation. Government will comb the nooks and crannies of the state to enforce fumigation. This will definitely reduce bad odour that we perceive around us.

On noise pollution, Shabi said the state government would be visiting factories with big generators and heavy equipment to work out modalities on how they could reduce their noises.

溺ost of these industries use generators with the current situation of poor electricity in the country but they do not use silencer. This disturbs the public a lot. We will visit them and enforce them to do something about it, he said.

The LASEPA boss also spoke on plan to control noise in the state, saying the agency would soon meet with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and relevant stakeholders to seek ways to abate noise generated by religious organisations.
