JTF Kills Suspected Militants, Deploys Troops To Rivers Communities

Post  Admin on Sat Oct 25, 2008 8:40 pm

FIVE suspected militants were killed on Thursday night by the naval unit of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Flush Out III at Cawthorn Channel in Degema Local Council of Rivers State.

Spokesman of the JTF, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa told The Guardian yesterday that the naval personnel, who were on routine patrol, clashed with the suspected militants as the latter cruised in three speedboats on the Cawthone Channel.

Two Ak-47 Assault Rifles and a speedboat were recovered from the militants, Musa said.

He stressed that no soldier was injured or killed in the crossfire. Musa reiterated that the JTF was resolute in its resolve to eradicate militancy and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta.

Meanwhile, the JTF Commander, Brig-Gen. Sarkin Yarkin Bello has ordered the deployment of more troops to Abonnema and Degema after intelligence report indicated that the areas have become havens for militants.

Explaining the development, Musa said: "The decision to deploy troops in the above-mentioned areas is purely based on undeniably credible reports that these communities have high concentration of militants and related criminals. Above all, some militant camps are located in the areas."

"Communities were attacked and people were killed, terrorised, maimed and in some areas women were raped by militants. Inter-cult crises have been witnessed. Practically, people are begging for JTF intervention in the areas, hence the decision by the JTF commander to deploy troops in the areas mentioned."

Musa urged Abonnema and Degema residents to cooperate with the JTF troops by giving them information that would lead to the speedy arrest of the militants.

He stated: "They (the troops) are not an occupational force but only deployed to assist the communities in maintaining law and order. They are to reinforce the existing JTF troops in Buguma which have been overseeing Abonnema and Degema."
